Why don't some pastors give invitations to respond to the gospel?
1. A desire to avoid manipulation and emotionalism
2. A doctrinal conviction
3. Never seen it done accurately and Biblically
Jesus invited people to follow Him.
-Simon, Andrew, James and John (Matthew 4:18-22)
-Levi the tax collector (Matthew 9:9)
-A large crowd (Mark 8:34-38)
-The rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-22)
-Peter and the crowd (John 6)
-The church in Laodicea (Revelation 3:20)
-Everyone who hears or is thirsty (Revelation 22:17)
Be Confident
"The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
Be clear
"How can I understand unless someone explains it to me?" Acts 8:31
Be Christ-centered
'If you confess with your mouth JESUS IS LORD and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Roman 10:9)
Be concise
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
“Clayton, if I could go back and change some things about how I did evangelism, one of the
things I would do differently is spend less time delivering the sermon and more time extending the invitation. That’s the most important part of the sermon anyway. I should have talked less and given the Holy Spirit more time to talk to the audience, and given them more time to respond to His invitation. Don’t be cute. Don’t be clever. Preach Christ and Him crucified. Tell sinners how to be saved. Then give them a choice to make, right there on the spot, when their hearts are tender and they are experiencing God’s loving conviction.”
Billy Graham, April 2005
